Fire on Mont Blanc
The Mont Blanc massif straddles Italy, France and Switzerland in the High Alps of central Europe. Mont Blanc itself is considered the birthplace of modern mountaineering but it also has a cultural and literary significance. Lord Byron and the Shelleys visited in 1816 and the mountain features in Mary’s novel Frankenstein, Percy’s eponymous poem and Byron’s gothic play Manfred. This photograph was taken near the French town of Samoëns and shows the last alpenglow painting the white mountain red.
