The Lava Giant
Etched into the lava fields on the island of Santiago in Ecuador’s Galápagos archipelago is the Lava Giant. His is a lonely existence, frozen in the pyroclastic flow at Sullivan Bay since the volcanic eruption of 1897. He remains positive, however; a perpetual wink and wry smile for the occasional visitors who trek the billowy undulations of the pāhoehoe flow on the Galápagos’ most mysterious island.
