Boca do Inferno

The Miradouro da Boca do Inferno lies atop the Sete Cidades region on the island of São Miguel in the Azores archipelago. The vast caldera was formed as a result of three collapses after eruptions of the stratovolcano beneath. The viewpoint boasts views of three crater lakes: Lagoa Azul, Lagoa do Santiago and Lagoa Rasa. Whilst the appellation of Hell’s Mouth may have been apposite at the time of the eruptions, on a clear day the view is as idyllic as any I can recall seeing.
