Sápmi

The vast region of Lapland, in northern Finland, is the fabled home of witches and magicians, who had power to send winds and tempests. It is a land of contrasts, of total darkness and total daylight, of northern lights and midnight sun. The Swedes coined the pejorative exonym ‘Lapp’ for the Finnic people of the land, who refer to themselves as the Sámi and who know the region as Sápmi. Of Lapland’s 749 fells, Riisitunturi (pictured here in January) is, to me, the quintessential winter wonderland.
