The Sanctuary
The Holy Trinity Church of Gergeti is perched precipitously, high on the edge of a gorge in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region in north-eastern Georgia. The distinctive cross-cupola design dates from the 14th century and is the only one in the historical Khevi area. It survived the soviet iconoclasm and has become a symbol of modern Georgia. In the summer, the Greater Caucasus mountain range comes alive with green pasture and the hike up around the side of the gorge to the church is heaven on earth.
