The Old Mill

Perched on the bank of the fast-flowing Patoniva River in Finland’s Oulanka National Park is the Myllykoski (or Old Mill). The winters are harsh in Northern Ostrobothnia, often with prolonged periods of snow-filled grey skies, little daylight and temperatures plummeting to -40C. Finland is an outdoors place, whatever the weather, and despite the shelter and warmth of the wilderness hut, the locals prefer to cook reindeer meat and sip hot berry juice around an open fire; it’s not hard to see why.
