East Jerusalem Rising

The term ‘East Jerusalem’ is politically sensitive in the extreme. The area, which connotes the land occupied by Jordan during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, is and has been bitterly disputed since the end of the Six-Day War in 1967, when it was absorbed into a victorious Israel’s greater Jerusalem territories. Today, Israel occupies - but the putative Palestinian state claims - East Jerusalem as capital. This photograph shows dawn in the sprawling settlement outwith the ancient walls of the old city.
