The View
An idiosyncratic feature of the Scandinavian landscape is the use of sod or turf roofs. The construction technique, which was used almost universally in vernacular architecture well into the 1700s, requires a sloping base of wooden roof boards onto which birch bark and turf is layered. The result is an insulated and waterproof membrane. These modern examples are holiday cottages in the village of Bøur, on the Faroese island of Vágar. The property, for obvious reasons, is known as “the View”.
