Torii
The shrine of Inari at Fushimi-ku in Kyoto, Japan, is for obvious reasons a popular place of pilgrimage for shintoists and photographers alike. The site contains thousands of distinctive vermillion torii gates, each of which is individually inscribed and dedicated by a Japanese business to the fox god, Inari, who symbolises prosperity and worldly success - as well rice, tea and sake. The torii are iconic, appearing in the film Memoirs of a Geisha, as well as every tourist’s photo album.
