The Caleta of Hanga Roa

New year’s day 2017 and a large sea turtle does laps of the caleta (or cove) in Easter Island’s port settlement of Hanga Roa. The sheltered caleta is the island’s only harbour and serves as the point of departure for the colourful fishing boats of the Rapa Nui; it is also a feeding area for the giant sea turtles of the Pacific Ocean. Confined to a single settlement on the island by reason of historical suppression, the Rapa Nui are now thriving in their capital “city” of Hanga Roa.
