Tŵr Mawr | The Great Tower

Situated off the north-west coast of Wales, UK, the island of Anglesey (or Ynys Môn in Welsh) has no fewer than seven lighthouses. This is perhaps unsurprising given its location between Britain and Ireland – where it acts as a trading conduit – and the rough tendencies of the Irish sea. In this land of lighthouses, none is more spectacular than the Tŵr Mawr or Great Tower on Llanddwyn Island, which marks the entrance to the Menai Strait. The island is tidal and so visitors face the prospect of being cut off. This is one of the iconic views of Wales, shown here in three photographs from a windy winter’s afternoon.
