Misty Mountains Cold

“Far over the Misty Mountains cold | To dungeons deep and caverns old”, The Hobbit (1937). As well as being a Cambrophile and champion of the beautiful Welsh language, JRR Tolkien was fascinated by landscapes and drew inspiration from the Welsh countryside for parts of his Middle Earth. To me, the peaks in the Snowdonia National Park evoke Tolkien’s fictional mountain range. These five photographs depict Tryfan, the Afon Lloer (the River of the Moon) and Llyn Ogwen in a sodden February, the wettest on record.
