Valley of the Moon

The “vast, echoing and God-like” landscape of the Wadi Rum enthralled T. E. Lawrence, whose adventures during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18 saw him pass through the valley, now in modern day Jordan, several times. It is also known as the Wadi al-Qamar (the Valley of the Moon) and is notable for its ochreish desert, which glows a fierce red when the sun is low in the sky but turns to orange in the midday heat. This is a place in which one cannot help but feel small – and it is difficult to convey its grandeur in a photograph.
