Mykines

Of the 18 major islands in the North Atlantic archipelago known as the Faroe Islands, Mykines feels the most remote, the most mysterious. In 2018, the island’s population was as low as 10 permanent residents, though more come in the summer, when the puffins and a few tourists arrive. Storms and rough seas can cut the island off for days, leaving visitors stranded. Blue skies such as these are a rarity and have the effect of rendering one of Europe’s most photogenic lighthouses, Hólmur, a mere folly.
