Lemuria
The lost continent of Lemuria (literally, the land of the lemurs) is part of the creation mythology of the Mascarene island of Mauritius. The story goes that Lemurian giants roamed the Indian Ocean looking for paradise and alighted on Mauritius, whereupon they sculptured its mountains, gave life to the land and left sentinels to guard its peaks. This photograph shows the peak known as La Tourelle – a tropical Matterhorn – basking in the late afternoon sun as a rainbow illuminates Tamarin Bay.
