Land of the Jacobites

The hamlet of Glenfinnan, in the Lochaber area of the Highlands of Scotland, is famous for two reasons. On 19 August 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard here and proclaimed his right to the English and Scottish thrones, thereby starting the Jacobite rising. More prosaically, its magnificent viaduct, over which the West Highland Line runs, is featured in the Harry Potter films. It is the latter which draws the crowds to watch the steam train (aka the Hogwarts Express) on its journey between Fort William and Mallaig.
