Little Bo-Kaap

Tucked away in downtown Cape Town, by the slopes of the Lion’s Rump, is the historic Bo-Kaap district. The area is famed for its colourful houses and is home to a Muslim community known as the Cape Malays. Their ancestors are the political exiles, prisoners and slaves who arrived from Asia and East Africa after 1658. It is a colourful example of Cape Town’s multicultural heritage, which is now at last a source of pride. These three, increasingly abstract, photographs show the painted houses on Wale Street – where the residents have a more prosaic taste in the colours of their cars.
