Chichi Cemetery

The cemetery in the Mayan K’iche’ town of Chichicastenango, in the Guatemalan highlands, is a colourful celebration of life and death. Mayan tradition and Christianity are fused and the dead are memorialised in vibrantly painted mausoleums or with simple crosses. The colours are symbolic and representative of family roles or status. This photograph shows two graves of grandfathers; the yellow represents the protection of the sun, whilst the Latin cross is the instrument of Jesus' execution.
