Ship of the Sky

The Balinese love kites. Every July, teams of competitors gather at Sanur to take part in the Bali Kite Festival. This photograph features a sail boat kite at nearby Seminyak beach, where it was being flown by a young boy. Whilst it differs from the three traditional kites flown during the festival (being the fish-shaped Bebean, the bird-shaped Janggan and the leaf-shaped Pecukan), there is a place for the ship-shaped kites in the 'New Creation’ or Kreasi Baru category.
