Tree of Life (End of the River)

These tree-like patterns in the eastern corner of the Deadvlei in the Namib-Naukluft Park are the last vestiges of the Tsauchab. The Tsauchab is an ephemeral river which flows for 100km out of the southern Naukluft Mountains of Namibia. More often than not, however, it’s visible by where it used to be; it doesn’t rain very often here. This photograph shows one of its branches or streams. The indentations in the clay pan remain in situ, forming the rivulets into which rain may flow again one day.
