Mosi Oa Tunya

January marks the end of the low-water season at the Victoria Falls in Southern Africa, which means that visitors on the Zimbabwean side can gaze into the vast canyon over which the Zambezi River spills. This photo is from the Devil’s Cataract at the western edge looking into the Zambian side. The first European to see the falls was David Livingstone on 17 November 1855, and he named them after Queen Victoria. The Batswana name Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders) has a more poetic resonance.
